Wastewater treatment is necessary to meet environmental regulations imposed by the EPA prior to discharge back to a river, stream, lake, etc. The NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) controls water pollution by regulating point sources that discharge pollutants into waters of the United States. This includes the removal of organics, solids, heavy metals, nitrogen, and phosphates. Polymer chemicals are added to cause suspended solids to settle.
